Personal Experiences from Volunteers and Donors

A Privilege to Volunteer

The Rusinga CBO is doing great work for local people and the community of under-privileged children on the island.  Hella is an effective and honest worker who just wishes to help his fellow people around him.  I recommend anyone that wants to make a difference in Africa to partner with this wonderful organization.  During my time with the organization, I helped teach in the local primary school, donated a bicycle and donated a flag and flagpole to the school as well.  This was a great experience with an organization with an incredible amount of potential and integrity.

This was our first volunteer experience in Africa, and it was incredible! Hella and his family treated us like family. They are worried all the time if we were well, and provided incredible hospitality.  In the mornings, we helped Hella in the farm and we went to teach in the local primary school.  The school was so nice! We taught many things and the kids were so smart, sweet and grateful. The teachers even give you total freedom to teach what you want.  In the evenings, we used to go with Hella to the town, or we walked... of course, with a lot of laughs!  Life is very simple on the island, you won’t have the same comforts as in your country, but it is a great experience and African exchange.

Rusinga is a very special island with no tourists. For us, this was perfect because people wave and speak to you like a person, not a tourist.  We did many activities such as planting trees, teaching ecological sustainability and cooking typical Kenyan food.  We thank Hella and his family for everything! It has been an unforgettable experience.

My experience with Hella and his amazing family was awesome. On my arrival, Hella picked us up at the Mbita harbour and brought us on his motorbike to his home. We really loved the African lifestyle during the time of our stay.  We lived in typical African houses, only had bucket showers and cooked only with fire & charcoal. This experience was amazing. Hella is a very caring, well educated young guy with a great sense of humor. His mother is a very friendly person with a huge heart and his dad is one of the smartest and calmest persons I have ever met. Very sympathetic and very authentic. Our main task was to set up the new library which received a donation of 1000 books which needed to be registered. We also trained the kids in soccer and did some gardening. Living on the lake was relaxing and a unique experience.

Thank you Hella for showing us the real African lifestyle and allowing us to help your organization!
